Chairman’s Message

Randy Hoyt, Chairman

PhotoCAM continues to forge on as I complete my second term of office in a now-mature organization.

Our last conference, held in November 2001, was a bellwether in terms of CAM achieving broad-based acceptance as the voice of the moving industry in Canada. That conference saw a blend of the best aspects of our industry, culminating in the awards to Tim Moore (Distinguished Service) and Chuck Martin (Founder), both of which were richly deserved.

As we go forward in 2002, there are two projects that have gained the attention of the Board and the National Office. The first concerns a National Compensation Survey, which was designed by CAM through a committee headed by Vice Chairman Graham Acreman, assisted by the National Office and consultant N. K. Pedersen & Associates. We expect the results of this survey to be available in late Spring; they should provide much-needed benchmarks for movers across Canada to ascertain wage rates and other compensation levels for our industry.

A second initiative is being spearheaded by Board member Larry Rosenberg, and will focus on establishing forums on profit maximization facilitated by Jim Larsen, who has become a legend within the CAM family because of his financial advice and acumen. We expect to kick-start these sessions late in the Fall.

In closing, I would be remiss not to mention the concern that CAM has about the recent astronomical increases in insurance rates! Such increases have been as high as 125%. As a result, many firms have had to significantly reduce coverage, and still pay larger premiums. As members of CAM, we would like to hear from you on the matter of insurance surcharges.

My best wishes for a profitable, rewarding summer!
