Movers’ Edge

JANUARY 2004 (2)

NORTH AMERICAN CARGO SECUREMENT STANDARD

Since 1994, there has been active and close collaboration between representatives of governments and industry in both Canada and the United States in pursuit of developing and implementing uniform regulatory requirements for securement of cargo on highway transport vehicles.

The regulations came into effect in the USA on January 1, 2004. Some of the regulations and procedures do apply to the commodities movers carry including automobiles. The information in the driver’s handbook provides useful instruction on good practices in securing cargo.

The US Regulations can be seen on CAM’s website in a PDF file.

The Driver’s Handbook on Cargo Securement is also posted in a PDF file.

Complete information on the topic can be seen at www.ab.org/ccmta/ccmta.html. The documents can be found in the September 2002 section (“Final Rule”) and the November 2003 section (“Training Program”).
