Doug Auld, David Fennell, Anne Martin and Gerry Puckrin (presidents of the four major van lines) will discuss their concerns about major issues for movers – low profit margins, shrinking markets, uneven workflow cycles, quality standards and labour shortages – and their ideas and suggestions for actions the industry could take as a whole.
Insurance: September 11, 2001…A Worldwide Event
John Hawkrigg of Hunter Keilty Muntz & Beatty will inform members about today’s insurance marketplace in the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy and with its ongoing effects on the insurance industry.
The Nuts and Bolts of Third-party Services: How to profit by using a nationwide service company
Stephen Eschbacher of Household Moving Services in New Jersey will present the financial benefits of outsourcing moving services and methods. By doing so, a mover can eliminate claims exposure when handling complex equipment (e.g., exercise, playground, stereo and computer equipment) and reduce payroll hours through outsourcing.
Government Moving Contract, An Update
Jill Parkinson of the Department of National Defence will review contractor-compliance statistics for the past year (where the service has been good and where it needs improvement), and the members’ level of satisfaction as measured by telephone surveys. She will discuss the progress of the electronic-inventory process, which came into effect on April 1, 2002, and will provide an overview of the status of the alternative-to-scaling tests. Finally, she will try to forecast the level of moving activity in DND in the next year.
Economic Warming in North America
Dr. Tim O’Neill, Executive Vice-President and Chief Economist for BMO Financial Group (Bank of Montreal), will speak about the future of Canada’s economy. It’s an opportunity to develop one more input into your business forecast for the next year.

Sales and Marketing in Service Industries
Don Myles, Vice President, Sales and Marketing of IBM Canada, will present sales and marketing principles that you can use to motivate sales staff, improve technique and differentiate yourself from your competition.
CAM’s Compensation Survey
Graham Acreman and Pete Pedersen will present the results of CAM’s 2002 compensation survey. They will describe the value that the survey generated and lead attendees through the results. They will ask attendees about the information that they would like to see in a future compensation survey and how the results should be presented.
Panel and General Discussion
The last session of the conference will be a panel discussion and open forum in which members will discuss what they want from their Association. Topics for discussion will include:
- CAM equipment and services purchasing/leasing programs
- Employment advertising in CAM publications
- A system for dealing with consumer complaints against members
- Standard formula for valuation coverage
- Participation in national working group to develop guidelines for the moving industry
Trade Show
CAM will host a one-day trade show on Monday, November 25. The trade show will open at 07:30 and close after the Awards Dinner, at about 21:00. Supplier members are invited to participate. Full information will be posted to the website, and members advised when that has been done.

The Canadian Association of Movers will recognize industry leaders who have distinguished themselves for their contribution to the industry and the association, and their innovative practices.
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes a prominent member of the moving profession who exemplifies the standards that CAM promotes; serves as a positive role model; has demonstrated leadership, commitment and integrity; and has made significant contributions to the Canadian moving industry.
For 2002 – Allen Taylor
The Founders Award honours a pioneering member of the moving industry who has had a long career of outstanding contribution to and impact on the moving profession; has demonstrated innovation and leadership; has raised the profile and performance of the industry, and promoted quality and integrity by example; and has served as a mentor to others in the profession.
For 2002 – Sonny Williams
The Innovators Award recognizes achievements that can be seen by the whole moving industry. It is presented to an individual or team that achieves real innovations and/or significant breakthroughs in customer service, empowering employees, cutting red tape, achieving results Canadians care about, making significant process improvement, and/or advancing technology.
